Pitch has many meanings: a quality of sound, a desperate throw, or a steep section to climb. Repairing our relationship with the Earth requires the latter two efforts, but perhaps mostly the quality of listening.
From Canadian poet Robert Bringhurst:
“...if you are lucky enough to hear the Sandhill Cranes and watch them dance, you will be changed forever by this experience. But another thing that ought to happen is that it ought to occur to you that just because you can see the Sandhill Cranes dance doesn't mean that nothing else dances. What about the bacteria? What about the deer mites? What about the lichens? What about the other things that are outside your range somehow — the things whose voices are too high or too low in pitch for your ears; the things that are too small or too large for you to see. The Earth, for example.”
